about

A collaboration over the Atlantic Ocean that has spanned a decade is finally seeing the light of day.

Cav Johnson, a vet MC from Buffalo, NY and producer/MC, Jae Fresh, hailing from Brighton, UK began corresponding during the height of the MySpace era. Jae began making beats for Cav spanning back to 2008, but behind the scenes, they were slowly working on a project that infused the sounds and vibes harking back to the classic period in Hip Hop but with a heavy touch of Jazz.

While the album was considered done, the two actually can’t remember why they never put it out, so considered ‘that life just got in the way.’

In that time Cav released his emphatic solo effort titled ‘Talking all that Jazz’ and Jae released his concept mixtape ‘I Need a Coffee.’

While the core of the album was recorded all those years back, Cav and Jae got to work on four new tracks to help complete the package. It was after the duo’s solo releases that they both took a break from music altogether. As Jae references in the first track off the album ‘Very Clear’: I had to live life a bit and regain my love for it.

It’s apparent that even as the years passed the two still share that hunger with these newer tracks included.

Many of these tracks have been stored in the archives of Jae’s laptop since 2010 and since the twos ‘reconnection’ at the time of the pandemic, they both felt it was only right to release it, especially with the rising popularity of LoFi Hip Hop.

The album offers a look into the past and present, as the intro says. The sound does fit in that era of the 90s or more specifically ‘1994’ but with the current trend, it feels more modern than ever. It’s an album that lovers of traditional Hip Hop and big-time jazz-heads can come together and find that common ground. 1994 is for everyone and that’s exactly how Cav and Jae want it to be.
